Strengthening your credit file — what really works.
Most advice about the score is folklore. Here the levers are in order of their effect — with an honest statement of how long each one takes.
The big levers
Remove challengeable entries (Section 31 BDSG, expiry, errors), clear the overdraft and stop returned direct debits, make rate enquiries instead of credit enquiries. Effect within weeks to months.
The quiet levers
Everything on time without exception, few old stable contracts, the free data copy once a year. Effect over months — they carry the history.
The 90-day plan
Days 1–14 know, days 15–45 tidy up, days 46–90 consolidate — each stage with the free tool that prepares it. Only the credit bureaus calculate scores; nobody can guarantee a particular change.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly can I strengthen my credit file?
That depends on the lever: a deleted negative entry or a cleared overdraft takes effect within a few weeks to months, as soon as the credit bureau recalculates. A history of punctual payments and long, stable contracts grows over years. Realistic: a first measurable change in three months, a clear one in twelve.
What damages the score most?
In this order: hard negative features (enforcement, insolvency), reported payment defaults, many credit enquiries in a short time, many parallel loans and accounts, frequent account changes. Incidentally, place of residence and income do not go into SCHUFA — it does not even know your income.
Does it help to cancel old accounts and cards?
Usually no — rather the opposite: long-standing, unremarkably run contracts are a positive feature. Cancel unused SECOND credit cards and second accounts, but keep the oldest banking relationship. Scores read many short-lived contracts as unrest.
Do “score booster” apps achieve anything?
The measurable core you can do yourself: get the data copy, have errors corrected, check deadlines. Apps that demand a subscription for that or promise “secret tricks” sell packaged standard knowledge. Beware of anything that promises a guarantee — the credit bureau calculates the score, nobody else.
How often is the score recalculated?
The new SCHUFA score (since March 2026, 100 to 999 points) is calculated from the stored data on the day of every enquiry. A deletion or correction therefore takes effect as soon as the credit bureau has changed the data — a settled payment default does, however, count with reduced weight for up to three years under the published criteria.
What does my current account have to do with my credit file?
At the credit bureau: only the existence of the contract. At the bank itself: a great deal — account management is part of every credit check. A permanently used overdraft, returned direct debits and failed standing orders are visible there. Bank statements for the last three months decide loans more often than the score.
